Emma Louise Prin
Emma Louise Prin is a photographer born in 1996 in the north of France. All of Emma’s photographs are captured with a pinhole camera, a simple camera without a lens but with a tiny aperture. She uses the pinhole method because it allows her to create images closer to her emotions. The very long exposure times allow movements, the double appearance of the same model, and parts of the body that extend, multiply, and disintegrate.
Design Thinking
When thinking about how to approach this project, I tried to put myself in Emma’s shoes for a bit, designing in a way that feels close to her own technique and way of taking pictures.
Design MAKING
With the idea of making the cover a pinhole camera, I decided to keep the book all white, very simple, using an elegant serif typeface. In the middle of the book cover, I got a small hole lasercut, the “pinhole”, as well as a flap to cover that hole.
Having the book as a pinhole camera with the outside that simple, almost like hiding a secret or intimacy, I decided to replicate the process of actually taking a picture. So, I made the first page after the cover a picture.
I kept everything black and white, just like her photographs. The spreads were kept very simple and organized to let her art shine, maintaining the ongoing minimalism and elegance of the book. To continue the theme of the pinhole camera as the book, I decided to make the chapter dividers blurry, getting clearer as you progress through the book and flip through the pages, as if you were developing an actual picture.
